Ello,
We've laid down the ground work for some of this already.
The blue box to the left of a forum section is long term planned to be empty when there is no unread posts and filled blue when there are unread posts.
There are also a few other forum features I plan to add in the future including last 10 active topics, potentially new topics.
Time is something I want to add to the forums as it's very odd that it doesn't have it currently.
One of my main concerns for this feature is taking into account timezones and as such it needs a decent amount of time to properly test and ensure that it works correctly.
I've added all of the above to the development checklist and changed some of the priorities.

In addition to this suggestion, would it be feasible to have a button to mark all as read? :p
The ability to mark all threads in a board would be a nice, just add a button at the top of the board index (or allow you to read all by clicking on the blue box on the main forum inbox for a particular board?)

If I understand you correctly you can already do that.
If you click on the blue square you get a loading icon and then it clears that for that section.
